Aston Martin gives DBS the Ultimate send-off
British sports car games specialist wheels out special-edition DBS with a host of value-add goodies
Aston Martin’s DBS flagship (the ultra-low-volume, megabuck One-77 doesn’t really count as a legit flagship) is now getting long in the tooth, so the premium Brit brand has rolled out an ‘Ultimate’ version to give it a fitting send-off and keep sales ticking over.
The company is yet to issue an official press release on the newbie, and the accompanying images have thus far only appeared on the brand’s website (although since replicated on a handful of other news sites).
As per the Vanquish Ultimate that preceded it, the low-volume DBS gains a raft of tasty accoutrements to distinguish it from the donor car. Befitting a bespoke model, each DBS Ultimate will be individually numbered and customers will be able to choose from one of three exterior colours – Carbon Black II, Quantum Silver, and Silver Fox.
Keen trainspotters will also pick up on the darkened front grille, carbonfibre wing mirrors, smoked taillights, Zircotec coated tailpipes and yellow, red or black brake calipers. The limited-edition model also scores a uniquely coloured DBS badge, special number-plate surround and painted rear decklid spoiler.
Interior upgrades include diamond-quilted stitching on the leather seats, Alcantara headliner in either red or silver thread and gearshift paddles trimmed in ‘spicy red’ leather.
The DBS Ultimate will be available in coupe and Volante (convertible) body styles and with a six-speed manual gearbox or Aston’s Touchtronic self-shifter (a conventional torque-converter automatic rather than the Sportshift sequential used in the smaller Vantage).
No word as yet on pricing, but the DBS Ultimate is likely to cost around the $500k mark.
As for a DBS replacement, some sources are speculating it will arrive next year to coincide with the venerable brand’s centenary. Expect it to adhere to Aston Martin’s formula of subtle evolution rather than wholesale change.
The existing DBS launched in 2007, backed by a starring (but short-lived) role in the James Bond blockbuster Casino Royale.

Mazda motorsport stalwart retires
Mazda Australia motorsport chief Allan Horsley announces retirement

Homegrown hero, Allan Horsley has retired from the racing scene. Ending on a high after several successful campaigns at Targa Tasmania, Horsley has been in charge of Mazda's motorsport outfit and part of the company's public relations team since 1981.
Horsley and Mazda Australia can claim 11 Targa Tasmania class wins from 1994; with the most recent this year with victory in the Showroom category and impressive sixth-place finish overall in a Mazda3 MPS.
He started with Allan Moffat Racing and the Mazda RX-7, helping the team to achieve three successive Australian Endurance Championships (between 1982 and 1984) and a trio of victories at the James Hardie Bathurst 12 Hour (1992 to 1994) events.
Before focussing on tarmac rally and the Targa Tasmania, Horsley 'created' the turbocharged RX-7 SP model, steered by Dick Johnson and John Bowe for a win in the Eastern Creek 12 Hour event.
Mazda Australia rightfully enjoys a point of difference between it and other importers with its continued application to Australian motorsport. Not even local manufacturers can claim such sustained efforts for in-house developed activity.
Long-time Mazda man and managing director for the brand in Australia, Doug Dickson has worked closely with Horsley for over 30 years.
"Allan's passion for fast cars and motorsports promotion was always going to be of great benefit to Mazda and so the last three decades have proved. His ability to overcome challenges and deliver giant-killing victories has played a huge role in putting Mazda Motorsport and our brand on the map," he said.
"His contribution to our motorsports program and our public relations efforts over such a long period are to be applauded and on behalf of Mazda Australia I'd like to extend my sincere gratitude to Allan and wish him all the very best in his retirement," Dickson said.

Infiniti confirms Benz-based A3 fighter from Europe
Magna Steyr to produce Infiniti's all-new A-Class-based premium small car in Austria from 2014
Three months before its Australian launch, Nissan luxury brand Infiniti has announced its all-new entry-level premium small car games will be produced by contract manufacturer Magna Steyr in Europe from 2014.
Motoring.com.au sources have also confirmed the obvious – that Infiniti’s first direct rival for the Audi A3, BMW 1 Series and Lexus CT will be based on the same Daimler MFA platform that underpins Mercedes-Benz’s new B-Class and upcoming A-Class, both of which will also be direct competitors for Infiniti’s inaugural C-segment compact.
Renault-Nissan and Daimler announced a strategic platform- and engine-sharing alliance in April 2010, but Infiniti has confirmed its next G Series sedan – which will be revealed early next year before joining Australia’s upcoming G coupe and convertible on sale here by late next year – will continue to be based on a Japanese-engineered front/midship platform.
Further details will not be announced until the Infiniti-Magna memorandum of understanding becomes an official deal, but the arrangement should provide Daimler with greater economies of scale for its MFA platform – which will eventually underpin at least six models, also including an all-new small SUV, the CLA compact coupe-sedan and possibly a new entry-level two-door – as well as licensing royalties from every small Infiniti Magna produces.
For its part, the deal allows Infiniti to produce an all-new entry model at lower cost in Europe for European and global markets – including Australia, where the new Infiniti range-opener should join the mid-size G sedan, coupe and convertible, the large M sedan and FX crossover before 2015.
Previewed by the sleek Etherea concept, Infiniti’s new baby will be key to its ambitious sales growth in Europe, which itself will be integral to its goal of selling 500,000 vehicles in more than 70 countries globally by 2016 – up from 145,000 last year and representing 10 per cent of the global luxury vehicle market. Last year Infiniti, which was born in the US in 1989 and introduced in Europe in 2008, sold just 3681 cars in Europe – up 54 per cent on 2010 figures.
Infiniti sees the new premium compact as vital in attracting a new audience in large markets like Europe, but also plans to increase its production base by adding manufacturing capacity in the US, where it will produce the JX crossover, and China – where it will produce two new models also from 2014, expanding the Japanese premium brand’s portfolio to more than 10 models.
Bookending the range by 2014 will be the new premium compact and an all-electric luxury sedan, while the radical EMERG-E concept previews a future mid-engined sports car with range-extending plug-in hybrid technology.
Reports suggest Magna could produce up to 60,000 Infiniti compacts annually at its plant in Graz, Austria, which builds the Peugeot RCZ coupe, Mini Countryman crossover and Aston Martin Rapide sedan. Magna Steyr, the European arm of Canada-based Magna International, is also reported to have engineered the new small Infiniti.
“This new vehicle represents a significant opportunity for the Infiniti brand to reach new consumers and grow in key markets such as western Europe,” said Nissan Motor Company executive vice-president Andy Palmer, who is responsible for Infiniti. “We are pleased to be working with Magna Steyr to realize this important product.”
As part of the Daimler-Renault-Nissan technology sharing deal, meantime, Renault will supply four-cylinder turbodiesel engines for the A-Class as well as Infiniti’s new compact and next G models, while four-cylinder petrol engines from Daimler will be fitted to all three models.
This week Nissan USA broke ground on a new factory in Tennessee to produce Mercedes-Benz four-cylinder petrol engines for both Infiniti and Mercedes models - including the C-Class, which will be built at Daimler's Tuscaloosa plant in Alabama from 2014. The new facility is located at the existing Nissan powertrain assembly complex and will have installed capacity of 250,000 units per year from the same year.
The first Infiniti cars to be available in Australia from August – initially only via dealerships in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, with Adelaide and Perth to follow next year – will be the FX medium SUV and M sedan range, with the current G coupe and cabrio to follow in December and a further five new models due here by 2016.

A-Class to employ Renault diesels
Sexy new Benz A-Class to run upgraded Renault diesel engines in a bid to boost appeal while lowering emissions
discount new cars games Get the best price on a new Mercedes-Benz
Luxury brand Mercedes-Benz has asked struggling carmaker Renault for a French kiss to help shed its stodgy small-car image.
Mercedes yesterday admitted it is leaning on its alliance with the volume French brand to find a powerplant for its lower, sleeker, youth-oriented third-generation A-Class.
Due to hit showrooms before the European summer break before arriving Down Under early next year, the A-Class will come with a development of Renault’s 1.5-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel in its efforts to sneak beneath the 100 grams per kilometre barrier for CO2 emissions.
While it will also launch the A-Class with a larger, proprietary diesel engine and cleaner, tech-clad petrol four-cylinder engines, it will be the Renault-derived four-cylinder engine which will power the entry-level A180 CDI, which is planned to be the biggest seller.
While Mercedes-Benz engineers insist they redesigned or swapped more than 50 parts in the 1.5-litre, inline engine, the core of the powerplant is the same engine that powers the French company’s humble Dacia – itself a sub-brand pitched beneath Renault.
“With 98 grams of CO2 per kilometre and 3.8 litres/100km, it is among the most environmentally friendly diesels in the compact car segment,” Mercedes-Benz diesel engine developer Dr Peter Lückert said of the engine, dubbed the OM607 in factory code, at this week’s technology forum in Stuttgart.
“The OM607 engine has been done in conjunction with Renault. It’s a Renault engine adapted massively to Mercedes-Benz requirements,” he admitted.
While the Renault version of the engine is now in its sixth generation and mostly sells in single-camshaft, eight-valve form, Mercedes-Benz has fitted it with an all-new 16-valve cylinder-head and a variable-vane turbocharger to produce 80kW of power.
It will also have 250Nm of torque when it mates to its six-speed manual gearbox, but Mercedes has wound that back to 260Nm when fitted with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
“Like all Mercedes engines, the OM607 was required to complete the extensive engine test program involving bench-testing and endurance runs. The application effort devoted to the OM607 by Mercedes-Benz was very considerable,” Dr Lückert said.
“In a joint project team of Mercedes and Renault personnel, the engine was especially improved in NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) and drivability.
“Numerous components are specific to Mercedes-Benz, for example the OM607 has the engine mountings of the M270 petrol engine, as well as a special dual-mass flywheel,” he defended.
“The starter is also flanged onto the transmission and the alternator and the air-conditioning compressor also come from the Mercedes modular system.”
It will sit in the A-Class range alongside the OM651 1.8-litre turbodiesel four-cylinder engine that was introduced by Mercedes-Benz in 2011, with a high-performance “TopType” 2.1-litre turbo-diesel following later this year.
While the smaller 1.8-litre versions of the OM651 will be available in 80kW and 100kW forms, the 2.1-litre diesel will crunch out 125kW of power and 350Nm of torque, when mated exclusively to the seven-speed double-clutch transmission.
The petrol engine is an all-new animal, dubbed M270, which will power the A-Class in either 1.6- or 2.0-litre forms. Designed to be spun around and used longitudinally in larger, rear-drive Benzes as well (where it will be codenamed M274), the M270 will push out between 90kW and 155kW of power, depending on the model.
While not as torque-rich as the diesel variants, the base 1.6-litre petrol motor will offer 200Nm, while the 2.0-litre version can reach 350Nm.
Mercedes claims a number of breakthroughs with the engine, including the addition of new piezo injectors for its direct fuel-injection system, lowering emissions and making for a cleaner burn.
With the injector mounted in the centre of the combustion chamber, where the sparkplug normally sits, the fuel jet penetrates less deeply than with multi-hole or early piezo systems. With this generation, the piezo injector has a response time of 0.1 milliseconds and its injection is precise to within a few thousands of a millimetre.
That’s then hit with up to four sparks within a millisecond, creating plasma with a large expansion and a very clean burn.
While rivals from Audi and BMW offer twin-scroll turbochargers, Benz claims it can achieve the same results with more-humble variable-vane geometry turbos on its engines.
The 1.6-litre version also receives a variable valve lift system it calls Camtronic, which switches quickly between two different valve depths to improve its efficiency.
The A-Class family will be the first to use Benz’s new seven-speed DCT (dual-clutch transmission), which is good for up to 450Nm of torque and can handle engine speeds of up to 7250rpm.
The 86kg gearbox is 367mm long and will be offered with a featherweight (try 46kg) all-new, three-shaft manual gearbox in the A-Class. Both transmissions are also slated for future use in the C- and E-Class.
