Heavily disguised but retaining the clamshell hood the next-gen Rangie has broken cover

Master spy photographers Carparazzi have snapped images this week of the next-generation Range Rover undergoing testing.

The model retains many of the brand’s iconic styling cues, including the clamshell bonnet, bold headlamps and sloping roofline. Though our snappers tell us the heavily-clad model is “significantly bigger” than its predecessor. This should translate to more interior space, especially in the second row and cargo bay.

A new lightweight aluminium frame, designed in conjunction with Jaguar, could shave up to 400kg from the behemoth’s kerb mass.

Driveline options are likely to remain unchanged from those found currently with one rather large exception: next-gen Rangie is rumoured to feature a hybrid or even plug-in hybrid variant. This model will feature technology borrowed from the diesel-electric Range e concept.

The redesigned Range Rover could be introduced in late 2012 as an MY13 model.
