Subaru Tribeca: the lowdown

Subaru is being very honest about the B9 Tribeca. Its face was its misfortune and it sold only 18,000 in the States instead of the projected 36,000. The ugly duckling hasn’t quite become a swan, though. The new Tribeca (no longer B9) has shed the Edsel grille and moustache in favour of a more conventional single-piece grill, which makes it look – well, pretty much like everything else. Its body looks more muscular, however. The raised bonnet line, deeper front valance and headlamps give it more presence, and the rear pillar is slimmer, echoing the shape of the smaller BMW X3’s.
What else is new?

Subaru has been busy on mechanical changes, as well as lessening damage from the ugly stick. Increased bore and stroke increase engine capacity from 3.0 to 3.5 litres, and a new Active Valve Control System increases efficiency. Power goes up from 245 to 256bhp, torque from 215lb to 247lb ft, and this, plus a revised transmission shift pattern should make cruising more relaxed. Subaru also claims a 10 percent improvement in fuel economy, crucial for broadening the appeal of heavy SUVs in these enviro-conscious days. If Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system isn’t enough to keep you on the road, there’s also Vehicle Dynamics Control, variable torque distribution and a four-wheel traction control system. Access to the third row of seats is easier in seven-seater models, but it’s still cramped back there.
